San Giorgio Parish Church

Via Lussignoli 2 - 25030 Erbusco (BS)

The San Giorgio Parish Church in the village of Villa Pedergnano dates back to the 16th century and has undergone continuous transformations and expansions. The original chapel was built in 1567 and was recognized as an autonomous parish only in 1599. However, it was a small church that couldn’t accommodate the faithful, so a new church was constructed, which was consecrated in 1791.  In 1849, the parish priest Riccobelli decided to expand the church by adding two more aisles.

In 1852, the architect Camotti from Brescia began the construction of the south aisle, followed by the construction of the north aisle. The works was completed around 1870, including the completion of the compasses of the main door and the side doors. From 1920 to 1925, the church was completely decorated by the Rubagotti Brothers from Coccaglio, commissioned by the parish priest Don Lorenzo Rangoni.

The architectural structure of the presbytery underwent further modifications in 1957 when the floor was lowered, the space was lengthened, and the existing balustrade was straightened. The facade of the San Giorgio Parish Church, enhanced by the recently renovated spacious square, is divided into two levels, with Ionic marble capitals from Rezzato. The entire structure is supported by a high marble base, and the entrance portal bears the inscription “Sancto Georgio”.

Above the portal, there is a painting depicting Saint George slaying the Dragon. Inside the church, there are dome-shaped side chapels, and the aisles are divided by four arches supported by pillars with Corinthian pilasters.
